Palacio was the dream of the owner Paulo who wanted the house preserved at any cost, that is how it gained historical importance as many famous Portuguese dignitaries visited and stayed there. Some of the Viceroys used it as holiday homes and photographs in one section of the sprawling mansion gives glimpses of the glorious Portuguese heydays, even dresses they wore, the ballroom parties and customs of yore. Palacio changed several hands, was even used as a destitute home by nuns who found it challenging running such a palatial home. Finally privatisation was the only way to fulfill the wishes of Paulo and today the Palazio has been restored to its former glory and open for public viewing.
